Winter checklist for your drive and patio

Hertfordshire winters are more wet than snowy, and freeze-thaw cycles do the real damage. Here's a simple checklist that saves money in spring.

Clear leaves and moss

Wet leaves left on block paving and patios stain the surface and make it slippery. Clear them weekly through autumn.

Seal cracks before the frost

Water in a crack freezes and expands. Fill small cracks in tarmac and re-point loose patio joints while it's still dry.

Salt carefully

Rock salt is fine on block paving and tarmac in moderation. Sweep up the residue when it thaws. On resin, use plastic shovels only.

Keep drains clear

Lift the grids on channel drains and gullies and clear the leaves so heavy rain has somewhere to go.
