Why the sub-base matters
Block paving that's laid properly is extremely hard-wearing. As long as the sub-base is substantial, the drive won't crack, sink or dip, and nothing will grow through it. That's why we put most of our effort into what you'll never see: digging out to the right depth, laying and compacting a graded stone sub-base, and setting firm edge restraints so the blocks can't creep.
Patterns and colours
Herringbone at 45° or 90° is the strongest pattern for cars turning on the drive. Stretcher bond and basketweave suit paths and patios, and a contrasting soldier-course border frames the whole thing. Blends such as brindle, charcoal and autumn hide tyre marks and wear well. We'll bring samples so you can see them against your brickwork.
Drainage done right
Under the Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) rules, a new front drive over 5m² either needs to be permeable or has to drain onto a lawn or border on your own property. Otherwise you'll need planning permission. We'll talk you through the options: permeable blocks, falls towards a soakaway or border, or channel drains.
