Doing gravel properly
The common complaints about gravel are ruts, loose stones and weeds. All three come from skipping the groundwork. We dig out, lay a compacted sub-base and a weed membrane, and fit solid edging. On sloped or busy drives we can use cellular stabilising grids so the gravel stays where it's put.
Choosing your stone
Angular stone around 14–20mm locks together and is easier to walk and drive on than round pea shingle. Colours range from golden flint to grey granite and Cotswold buff.

Gravel is permeable, so it normally meets the SuDS rules for front gardens. Always check if you're in a conservation area or the house is listed.
