What goes into a good tarmac drive
Tarmac lasts when it goes down on a solid, well-compacted stone base, gets laid hot in two courses (a binder and a fine surface course), and is rolled while it's still at the right temperature. Cutting corners on any of those steps is why cheap drives rut and crack.
Edging and details
A tarmac drive looks its best with a crisp edge. Block paving borders, kerbs and decorative inlays like a block circle (pictured) turn a plain surface into a feature.
Resurfacing or replacing?
If the existing base is sound, a resurface (overlay) can work out cheaper. If the drive is breaking up, sinking or full of weeds, the base has failed and it should be dug out and rebuilt. We'll tell you honestly which one you need.

Can I drive on new tarmac straight away?
Usually within a day or two, but avoid sharp turns on the spot and leave stands on hot days for the first few weeks while the surface fully hardens.
Is tarmac permeable?
Standard tarmac isn't, so it has to drain to a border, soakaway or channel drain. Porous asphalt is available too. Ask us about SuDS.
